Edition 33, August 2007

Welcome to the 33rd.  edition of the monthly newsletter for the Saturday lunchtime concerts.

Looking Back
There was a change to the concert diary entry for the first Saturday in July. Ian Stewart replaced Allison Horriben with a programme of music for organ which included Moonlight Serenade, Over the Rainbow, To A Wild Rose and the Funeral March of a Marionette. The following week (14th.) there was another double concert with music for organ given by Malcolm in the first half, and light jazz piano by Brian Neal in the 2nd. Brian featured the music of Cole Porter in his part of the programme.

On the 21st. we had Rebecca Bell (soprano) and Anthea Fry (piano) which featured music by classical composers Handel, Purcell, Ireland, Howells and Roger Quilter, ending with music from My Fair Lady by Lerner & Loewe.

With Mark Swinton (Assistant Organist at Bath Abbey) being unavailable for the 28th. Malcolm and Brian Neal returned once more for another double concert.

The organ music featured Sir Arthur Bliss, Dudley Buck and Widor, whilst Brian entertained us with show tunes from Rogers & Hart.

Concerts in August
The first Saturday in this month’s series of concerts is my recital on Euphonium with Malcolm at the piano & organ. There are 2 pieces originally for violin that I have transcribed, one by a little known Carl Bayrhoffer called Muckentanz, the other, a beautiful little Cradle Song by Tchaikowsky. The latter will feature the 1912 Cavalry Tuba and I’m grateful to Mark Robbins who gave me the music for these two items.

There is also another UK premiere (our 59th.) entitled Little Suite for Euphonium by Elaine Fine from Illinois, USA. It is unaccompanied and has 3 short movements; Preludio (in the classical style), a passionate Reverie and a humorous Puppet Dance. I will also be combining with the wonderful organ in the 2nd. movement of the Berlioz Grand Symphony for Winds.

The 11th. features Michael Jewell (tenor) with Kate Jewell at the piano and the following concert (18th.) will see the first visit of Steven Christmas on classical guitar. August ends with the return of Sandy Clare (soprano) and Mark Ellis (flute).

Other Concert News
On August 25th. at 7.30pm Malcolm will be performing at St. Giles Church, Stoke Poges in a Summer Concert. Tickets are £12 which includes wine & cheese.
