The Mouthpiece (22)
The Saturday Lunchtime Concert Newsletter: Edition 22, September,2006
Welcome to the 22nd. edition of the monthly newsletter for the Saturday lunchtime concerts.
Looking Back
August started with another double concert (5th.) with the first half being given by the Capriccioso Low Brass Trio. Previously a quartet, without a player on Baritone available, the group had reformed as a trio, with 2 euphoniums and 1 bass tuba. Andy Barrett & David Elliot-Smith joined me in a programme of works by Mozart, Beethoven & Giuliani amongst others. We look forward to our next appearance in November when we will include in our programme, the premiere of a brand new work written for us by Terry Treherne, based on 3 negro spirituals.
The second half concert featured Malcolm at the organ in the Adagio & Finale from the 3rd. Symphony by Louis Vierne. John Coombes was booked to perform at the piano on the 12th. but was unavailable and once more Malcolm stepped in with another fine programme of music for organ.
My 23rd. Recital at St. Mary’s was the feature of Saturday 19th. We had 2 premieres for you on that day, the final movement, ‘Agitato’ of Kenneth Friedrich’s Euphonium Concerto, and a brand new work by Joe Miserendino, a commission from Major Mark Hill of the USAF in Virginia titled ‘A London Nightscape’.
Other works included a little known ‘Canzonetta’ by Alfredo D’Ambrioso, the Cavatina from ‘4 Romantic Pieces’ by Dvorak, a beautiful arrangement of Sunrise, Sunset from ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ and the grand ‘Rhapsody for Euphonium’ by American composer James Curnow, with Malcolm at the organ.
The reviews from the composers and arrangers of the music were very favourable and they can be seen on-line next to the live recordings.
August was to end (26th.) with the much anticipated return of Matthew McAllister on classical guitar. Unfortunately, he was on his way from Scotland to Ireland that day so yet again, Malcolm came to the rescue with some wonderful organ music, prepared at only a days notice!
Matthew sends his sincere apologies to you all and looks forward to returning early in 2007.
