The Mouthpiece (21)
Welcome to the 21st edition of the monthly newsletter for the Saturday lunchtime concerts at St. Mary's
Looking Back
July (1st) started with a song recital given by Rebecca Bell, soprano, and Anthea Fry, piano. The following week (8th) we had another double concert with the first half given by Ian May at the organ followed by music for baritone and euphonium duet given by Sue and I with Malcolm at the piano. The recordings of the premieres of music by Joe Miserendion (USA) and Terry Treherne received great praise from the composers. The final work with Malcolm at the organ, the Ave Maria by Caccini, ended the concert in fine style.
Guy and Louise Bunce (piano and flute) returned for the first half concert on the 15th together with Malcolm performing the second half programme which included the premiere of Introduction & Fugue for Organ by Guy.
Saturday 22nd saw Peter Vaughan and Ian Stewart combining in a programme of music for piano and organ, with works ranging from Gershwin to Elgar. As we go to press, the month ends (29th) with Keith Bosley's recital at the piano which will feature music by William Baines.
Concerts in August
August starts with another double concert (5th) with the first half being given by the Capriccioso Low Brass Trio.
Previously a quartet, without a player on baritone available, the group has reformed as a trio with 2 euphoniums and 1 bass tuba. Andy Barrett and David Elliot-Smith will be joining me in a programme of works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Giuliani amongst others.
The second half concert will feature Malcolm at the organ in the Adagio and Finale from the 3rd Symphony by Louise Vierne.
John Coombs is featured at the piano on the 12th and my 23rd recital is featured on the 19th.
We have 2 premieres for you on that day. The final movement 'Agitato' of Kenneth Friedrich's Euphonium Concert, and a brand new work by Joe Miserendino, once more a commission from Major Mark Hill of the USAF in Virginia, 'A London Nightscape'.
Other works will include a little known 'Canzonette' by Alfredo D'Ambrioso, the Cavatina from '4 Romantic Pieces' by Dvorak, a beautiful arrangement of Sunrise, Sunset from 'Fiddle on the Roof' and the grand 'Rhapsody for Euphonium' by American composer James Curnow, with Malcolm at the organ.
