SWIPE Music August '07
SWIPE held their Summer Showcase 2007 at St. Mary's on the 31st August playing to an audience of over 150.
SWIPE was formed in 1997 to help further the education and training of Children and young people at risk of being excluded from school. It also offers single parents, families and the over forties assistance in the creation of employment opportunities. At present SWIPE is using music as a medium to work with young people between the ages of 8 and 19 and in some cases up to 25. SWIPE currently provided young people in Slough with many musical activities which include tuition in Steel Pans, Drums, Guitar, Violin and Vocal Coaching. Rehearsal space is also available for young bands to rehearse and record, as well as teaching young people the skills for recording and mixing their music. The young people on these projects are also given the opporunity to borrow instruments to enable them to practise at home when not at SWPIE. We also loan P.A.s and instruments to young band to enable them to go out into the community and perform at events they might not otherwise have an opportunity to do.
SWIPE is refurbishing old instruments donated by the public and giving them a new lease of life by giving them to the young people to use as they become available. Alongside this we have had donations of old PCs and coverted them into work stations which are being used by the young people to record and produce their music.
All of the above is free of charge, as funding is secured for these activities and many volunteers give their time to our projects.
SWIPE's aim is to enable the yong people of Slough to braoden their musical experiences.
Performers of the Summer Showcase included Dysphunkzional, E.T.D, Jessie Silence (aka John Childs), Daniel Beadle, Relinquish, Lizzie Massey, James Gibbons, Panachea: Slough's Community Steel Band, Banjo Bob.
