Debate - Has Multiculturalism Failed?: 23/11/06
Fenner's final event at St. Mary's took the form of a debate entitled: Has Multiculturalism Failed? Where do we go from here? Derek Turner of “Right Now” magazine and Hannah Lownsbrough of Demos locked horns on this controversial issue.
Derek Turner (born 1964 in Dublin, Ireland) is the editor of the right wing British conservative magazine Right Now!, and a freelance journalist. Turner's writings have been translated into 12 languages. He has written for a wide range of journals, including The Times, Literary Review, Salisbury Review, and The Sunday Telegraph, and writes regular articles for the U.S. magazine Chronicles and the German newspaper Junge Freiheit. Hannah Lownsbrough has been a researcher at Demos since autumn 2003, during which time she has worked on a range of different projects. She is also working on a community-led approaches to counter-terrorism, which investigates approaches to tackling the threat of violent extremism that are rooted within Muslim communities. With the Neighbourhood Renewal Unit and Manchester City Council, she is investigating the potential of a systems thinking methodology for renewing local government policies aimed at reducing anti-social behaviour amongst young people. In addition to her role at Demos, Hannah is also chair of trustees at Chelsea Youth Club and Flashpoint Play Centre, a community organisation based on an estate in central London. She is also a trustee of Crisis, the national charity for single homeless people. She has a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics.
