Edition 37, December 2007

Welcome to the 37th.  edition of the monthly newsletter for the Saturday lunchtime concerts.

Looking Back
The first concert of November (3rd.) was my 28th. recital with Malcolm. We premiered 3 new works for the Euphonium, Cloud Nine by Darrol Barry (born in Salford and now living in Oman), Aragonaise by our old friend Joe Miserendino from Pennsylvania and a new duet by Terry Treherne of the popular song, Fly Me To The Moon.

Alan Mann returned on Tenor Horn with me for this one and the other items in the programme featured a solo by renowned Euphonium soloist Denzil Stephens, and the resurrection of a long lost solo for Trombone and Organ by Gustav Holst, Concertante.

Darrol Barry was particularly pleased with his recording and is sending us yet another new solo to perform at St. Mary’s. All 3 composers were delighted with the performances and in particular, Malcolm’s accompaniment.

On Remembrance Saturday (10th.) Elaine Stowell returned to St. Mary’s to join with Malcolm in a moving programme of music & prose.

Henry Macey was at the Norman & Beard organ on the 17th. featuring fine music for organ and the final concert of the month (24th.) was given by Julia Booker (soprano) and Robin Howells (tenor) with Peter Toye at the piano. Music ranged from Frank Bridge to Vaughan Williams, finishing with a humorous “12 Days After Christmas” by Frederick Silver.

Concerts in December
The Christmas month opens on the 1st. with music for organ played by John Halsey from Windsor Parish Church. Ian May (Reading Minster) continues the theme on Saturday 8th. followed by a light hearted selection of music on the 15th. from Roger Lyon (bass), Brian Neal & Malcolm (piano), myself (tuba & Euphonium) and Alan Mann (Tenor Horn).

The Christmas Saturday concert (22nd.) features the Reading Minster Mid-Week Choir, conducted by David Butler with Malcolm Stowell at the organ. We say goodbye to 2007 with readers Joanna Hamilton & Keith Bosley (29th.) with A Finnish Messiah.
