Edition 35, October 2007

Welcome to the 35th.  edition of the monthly newsletter for the Saturday lunchtime concerts.

Looking Back
The first concert of the month was to have featured Philip and Sherry Wharton, but an early morning telephone call left Malcolm in the hot seat once again and he provided a fine concert of music for organ at very short notice. We heard music by Todero, Stainer, Stanford, Lefebure-Wely and Charles Lee Williams.

This was followed by a visit from Dr. Relf Clark on the 8th. with yet more music for organ, this time featuring Buxtehude, Francis Jackson, Karg-Elert, Bach, Langlais and Edward Elgar.

The 15th. saw the return of Naomi Wright, cello, with Robert Hunter at the piano as The Brunswick Duo in a marvellous programme of music by Shostakovitch and Schumann.

The Monday Madrigalists were featured on the 22nd. in a programme entitled ‘Pastyme with Good Companye’. There were fine songs by well known composers including Grainger, Wilbye, Dowland and Elgar, alongside lesser known writers such as Morley, Calkin, Ravenscroft and Harrington.

The last concert of the month (29th.) featured piano duets played by Henry Macey and David Darby and featured the music of Faure (Dolly Suite) and Bizet (Children’s Games) in a dazzling performance.

Concerts in October
The Forest Voices Chamber Choir (Alison Horriben) start this months series of concerts (6th.) followed by the Cameo Consort (Ian May) on the 13th.

Michael Thomas gives an organ recital on the 13th. as does Malcolm once again the following week (28th.) as the first part of a double recital. Part two features the newly formed Freedom Brass Ensemble with their first visit to St. Mary’s.
