Edition 34, Septemeber 2007

Welcome to the 34th Edition of the monthly newsletter for the Saturday lunchtime concerts.

Looking Back
The first Saturday in last month’s series of concerts featured my recital on Euphonium with Malcolm at the piano & organ. There were 2 pieces originally for violin that I had transcribed, one by a little known Carl Bayrhoffer called Muckentanz, the other, a beautiful little Cradle Song by Mozart. The latter  featured the 1912 Cavalry Tuba and I’m grateful to Mark Robbins who gave me the music for these two items.

There was also another UK premiere (our 59th.) entitled Little Suite for Euphonium by Elaine Fine from Illinois, USA. It was for unaccompanied Euphonium and had 3 short movements; Preludio (in the classical style), a passionate Reverie and a humorous Puppet Dance. I also combined with the wonderful organ at St. Mary’s in the 2nd. movement of the Berlioz Grand Symphony for Winds.

The 11th. featured Michael Jewell (tenor) with Kate Jewell at the piano with songs from the shows and the following concert (18th.) will saw the first visit of Steven Christmas on classical guitar with music by Dowland, Moreno-Torroba and Giuliani. August ended with the return of Sandy Clare (soprano) and Mark Ellis (flute).

Malcolm had to provide the piano accompaniment at short notice, in a programme featuring show music by Gilbert & Sullivan, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Jerome Kern and Ivor Novello. A sprinkling of classical music featured the works of Giordani, Lotti, Puccini and Faure.

Concerts in September
Today we have the return of Philip (piano) and Sherry (soprano) Wharton, followed by a visit from Dr. Relf Clark on the 8th. with music for organ.

The 15th. sees the return of Naomi Wright, cello, this time with Robert Hunter at the piano as The Brunswick Duo. The Monday Madrigalists appear on the 22nd. and the last concert of the month (29th.) features piano duets played by Henry Macey and David Darb
