Welcome to the 31st.  edition of the monthly newsletter for the Saturday lunchtime concerts.

Looking Back

The first Saturday lunchtime concert in May happened to be on my birthday! And what better way to spend it than in a recital for my friends at St. Mary’s. Music included two Spanish Dances by Moszkowski and a little known 4 movement piece for Clarinet called Song and Dance by Gilbert Vinter. My guest was Tenor Horn player Alan Mann, who joined me In a special arrangement of the duet ‘Simplicity’ by Terry Treherne.

The remaining pieces were the theme and variations on Weber’s Last Waltz by William Rimmer and an unaccompanied ‘Tarantella’ by Joachim Andersen. This last piece was performed on my new ‘toy’, the rare 1912 Cavalry Tuba now refurbished (though not fully cleaned!).

Organ music was featured on the 12th. with David Boarder, but the following week (19th.) Edward McCall cancelled at the last minute, leaving Malcolm once again to step in for the first half of a two part lunchtime concert. The second half featured another pupil of mine, Donna Tubb, making a return visit with music for Trumpet & Cornet. This included an adaptation of a Mozart Rondo and the finale to a Concerto by Hummel.

Yet another double concert was featured the following week (we do spoil you!) with Malcolm at the Organ with a fine programme featuring music by Louis Vierne, Alexandre Guilmant and Henry Mulet, in the first half, and Sue Vel on Baritone (with Malcolm at the piano) in the second. Her programme included music by Mozart, Gilbert & Sullivan and Karl Jenkins.

Concerts in June

The first Saturday concert this month (2nd.) features Julia Booker (soprano) and Robin Howles (tenor) with Antonia King at the piano. Next week (9th.) features more music for organ with the visit of Dr. Relf Clark from Oxford.

The 16th. sees the return of Peter Vaughan at the piano, before our next double concert on Saturday, June 23rd.

This features young singers and pianists from Berkhampstead, coached by our very own Catherine Orton. The last concert of the month (30th.) features David Darby (piano) and Thea Cramp (flute).
