Edition 30, May 2007

Welcome to the 30th. edition of the monthly newsletter for the Saturday lunchtime concerts.

Looking Back
The first concert in April fell on Holy Saturday, and we welcomed back Elaine Stowell who joined Malcolm in a moving performance of music and prose for Holy Week. David Butler returned to the organ on the 14th. and the programme included the Prelude & Fugue by Buxtehude, the Prelude in G minor by Dubois and the Chant de Mai by Josef Jongen, alongside music from the slightly less well known names of Galuppi, John Alcock, Flor Peeters and Hendrick Andriessen. More music for organ followed on the 21st. as Malcolm performed his Chairman’s Recital, with members of the Windsor & District Organists’ Association present. Music this time featured the Pastoral Melody by John West and the Fantasia on two themes of Guilmant. The last concert of the month saw the return of the 54 strong Priory School Chamber Choir (with instrumentalists), conducted by Roland Thompson. The children (aged between 8-10 years) presented a wonderful programme to a huge audience of 285. Instrumentalists were featured on Cornet, Trumpet, Clarinet and Flute and Malcolm was at the organ for Psalm 150 by John Harper. The Chamber Choir featured music ranging from African & Israeli folk tunes, to Johnny Dankworth.

Concerts in May
The first Saturday lunchtime concert in May happens to be on my birthday! And what better way to spend it than in a performance for my friends at St. Mary’s. Music includes two Spanish Dances by Moszkowski and a little known 4 movement piece for Clarinet called Song and Dance by Gilbert Vinter. My guest will be Tenor Horn player Alan Mann, who will join me In a special arrangement of the duet ‘Simplicity’ by Terry Treherne. Sue & I featured this a while ago as a Baritone/Euphonium duet and Terry has kindly changed the transposition for it to work with Tenor Horn this time. The remaining pieces are a wonderful theme and variations on Weber’s Last Waltz by William Rimmer and an unaccompanied ‘Tarantella’ by Joachim Andersen. This last piece will be performed on my new ‘toy’, the rare 1912 Cavalry Tuba now refurbished (though not fully cleaned!).

More Organ music is featured on the 12th. with David Boarder, and also with Edward McCall the following week (19th.) in the first half of a two part lunchtime concert. The second half features another pupil of mine, Donna Tubb, making a return visit with music for Trumpet & Cornet. This will include an adaptation of a Mozart Rondo and the finale to a Concerto by Hummel. Yet another double concert is featured the following week (we do spoil you!) with Malcolm at the Organ in the first half and Sue Vel on Baritone (with Malcolm at the piano) in the second. The programme will include music by Mozart, Gilbert & Sullivan and Karl Jenkins.

Other Concert News
Today (5th.) sees the 100th. anniversary of St. John’s Church, Victoria Road Farnham Common. I will be conducting Beaconsfield Brass in the afternoon which features regular performers from St. Mary’s. There is a Flower Festival for the 3 day weekend and all are welcome.

If you are close to North London on May 12th. be sure not to miss a concert by the BBC Winds in St. James’s Church, Muswell Hill at 7.30pm. In aid of charity, the music is an all American programme with guest conductor Craig Patterson.

On May 20th. Iain Flitcroft will be performing at the theatre organ in the Old Windsor Memorial Hall at 2.30pm. Tickets are available at the door priced £4.
