October 2006: Welcome to the 23rd.  edition of the monthly newsletter for the Saturday lunchtime concerts.

Looking Back
We had seven concerts for you last month. The first was the visit of Shuann Chai on 2nd. September, with music for piano by Beethoven (Variations on a Russian Theme) and Schubert (3 Pieces for Piano). Whilst on her UK visit from Boston, she was able to fit in a recital at St. Mary’s that was magnificent.

On the 9th. Robin Howles (tenor) and Julia Booker (soprano) returned to St. Mary’s with Antonia King at the piano and the following Saturday (16th.) was another double concert.

This featured Malcolm at the organ in the first half, playing the Minuet from the 4th. Symphony by Louis Vierne and the Prelude by Jacque Charpentier.

The second half featured songs performed by our very own Roger Lyon (bass) with guest Marguerita O’Connell, with Malcolm at the piano. The highlight was certainly Roger taking on the role of Bill Sykes in ‘My Name’ from Oliver.

Yet another double concert was featured the following week (23rd.) with Andrew Adams playing music for unaccompanied Cello by Bach in the first concert, and Ian May performing on the organ in the second, featuring music by Buxtehude, Sweelinck, W. Harris and Flor Peeters.

Then came the big one! Our 900th. concert on Saturday the 30th. featuring Malcolm at the organ, Mark Robbins (violin) and Guy Bunce (piano), the Reading Minster Mid-Week Choir, conductor David Butler and the Celebration Brass Ensemble conducted by Terry Treherne. Our surprise guest was Frank Bough who opened and closed the show. With over 200 people in the audience it was certainly a concert to remember.

Concerts in October
So, today (7th.) we have concert no. 901, featuring the Forest Voices Chamber Choir from Ascot. Ian May returns on the 14th. as conductor of the Cameo Consort and some light jazz will feature in the following concert. (21st.)

Brian Neal returns with his trio and guest Matt Ross at the piano.

The last concert of the month features Shola Hector (mezzo soprano) in a song recital, with Keith Bosley at the piano.
