Mothering
Sunday
The
fourth Sunday of Lent, at which servants were allowed to
visit their families in order to celebrate Easter. A 'mothering
cake' would be given to mothers by their children. The
Sunday is also known as 'refreshment Sunday' a day
of refreshment in the middle of Lent when the Lenten discipline
could be relaxed. As a sign of that 'refreshment' the Lenten
purple is replaced with a lighter pink.
While Mothering
Sunday has been taken over by the card industry as 'mothers'
day', the day is all about showing true love for our mothers.
We are reminded to do so not only on Mothering Sunday, but
every day. And this love is reflected in the example of Jesus
who, even on the cross, asked his friend John to look after
his mother, Mary.
