Confirmation
At
confirmation, Christians who have already
been baptised affirm publicly their commitment to Jesus
Christ as their chosen way of life. Christ Himself said that
He was the way, the truth and the life (Gospel of Saint
John, 14.6). At their confirmation, Christians renew
the promises which they themselves (or their parents and
godparents on
their behalf) have made at their baptism: to reject all evil,
to repent of their sins, and to come to Christ as the way
to life in all its fullness. Confirmation is an opportunity
for Christians to declare in full maturity their commitment
to Christ.
In
the Church of England, the sacrament of confirmation is administered
by the Bishop. Just as in the time of the Apostles (for example
in Acts of the Apostles, 8.14-17) the bishop lays his hands
on the head of the candidates and prays that they may receive
the gift of the Holy Spirit. Candidates for confirmation
may choose a sponsor (the equivalent of a godparent at baptism)
who often joins the bishop and the parish clergy in the laying
on of hands.
At
confirmation candidates are made full members of the Church
of England. On the Sunday after their confirmation children
frequently make their first communion. Our confirmation service
is normally shared between a number of churches in the Slough
area, and takes place about every six months. We aim
to prepare candidates for confirmation twice a year. We provide
preparation for children between the age of 12-14, as well
as for adults who seek to be confirmed. Anyone interested
in receiving confirmation should contact the Team
Vicar.
